On the retirement of an Anglophile lobbyist Don Burns, a Californian paper had this to say about his (unsuccessful attempts to derail the MacBride Principles campaign in the state.
Burns's first big client in 1957 was the California Association of Life Underwriters.
He later represented Great Britain, he said, in a seven-year battle to kill a bill carried by then-Assemblyman Tom Hayden that was being promoted by the Irish Republican Army, an insurgent group that was battling the British in Northern Ireland. The bill would have required CalPERS and STRS to divest themselves of stock in companies that had not signed a set of fair employment principles developed by the I.R.A.
"The I.R.A. had added requirements violative of British law," Burns said. "They would have had the effect of forcing the firing of Protestant workers and replacing them with Catholic ones."
I've written to the author and will keep you posted. Enjoy your retirement, Don, you'll be missed.
(Update on 1 July, I received this nice note from the journalist who wrote the piece, Bob Schmidtt: "Mr. O Muilleoir...I've forwarded your message to Don Burns. Thank you for enlightening me.")
