Chance for a new start with nuacht Ghaeilge?

Áthas orm feiceáil go bhfuil Gerry Adams ag moladh go n-úsáidfí an interregnum seo maidir le nuachtáin Ghaeilge le díriú arís ar an tséirbhís atá tuillte againn.

Delighted to see Gerry Adams suggest this interregnum with the demise of Foinse and disappearance of Lá be used to focus again on our demand for a full news service in Irish.

His statement follows:

Adams to meet Foras na Gaeilge on Irish Language newservice

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams MP MLA has expressed his deep disappointment at the collapse of the Irish language paper Foinse. Mr. Adams has asked for an urgent meeting with the chair and the chief executive of Foras na Gaeilge to discuss this and what steps are urgently needed to create an Irish language news service which is in print, is online and is of the same high standard of Nuacht TG4 and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.

Gerry Adams said:

"It is a matter of profound disappointment to me that the strategies of Foras na Gaeilge to provide a newspaper in Irish have failed.

I believe Foras na Gaeilge needs to adopt a strategy which has as its core objective the creation of an Irish language news service which must be in print and online and should be of the standard of Nuacht TG4 and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.

"It must present national and international affairs through our unique prism as Irish speakers.”

The Sinn Féin President said:

“Foras should enter quickly into discussions with the main Irish language bodies and with other news providers, including Nuacht 24 in Belfast, about the best way forward.

"The broadcasters BBC, RTÉ, TG4 and Raidió na Gaeltachta as well as Raidió Fáilte and Raidió na Life, should have a special role in any such discussions. If the private sector cannot provide the Irish language news service needed, then we must ask, can these broadcasters take on an additional news print and online role with the help of Foras na Gaeilge and/or Údarás na Gaeltachta.

"As a thriving 21st Century language, Irish needs a strong news service in print and online — daily and weekly — not only as an essential provider of news but also to create jobs, train journalists and build the Irish language sector.

Sinn Féin believes Foras must be to the fore in developing these priorities.

“I will be seeking a meeting with the chair and the chief executive of Foras to air these issues and to discuss Sinn Féin’s concerns at the closure of another newspaper."

i notice no mention of resurrecting Foinse. It will be interesting to see who now fills the gap and picks up Foras' money and who they are linked to. Cynics may later suggest this was the plan all along. if foinse was not to the funders liking they should have said, if it's the case that they've killed them off to usher a preferred option in i'll be pretty disgusted. it will be pretty obvious to everyone too if it turns out to be the case, im not sure choreography fools people so easily these days

Gerry Adams needs also to have a meeting with the CEO of Comhairle to discuss the same-tpe situation with Irish medium education in the North similiar to the demise of La Nua and Foinse.
People should be aware at a recent meeting with unhappy parents in Lurgan who were recently told their children could not attend an Irish medium secondary in Armagh, Comhairle told the parents they were there only to take notes and not to answer any questions. Several parents walked out of the Lurgan meeting in protest at this nonsense.
Foras and Comhairle are two sides of the same coin.

Isn't this just like when La Nua went under and then a few weeks later Minister Conor Murphy announces his Department would advertise in Irish language newspapers, if only such newspapers existed?
If only Conor had made his announcement a month earlier, but then there would have been a different result, wouldn't there?
Why couldn't Mr. Adams have demanded a meeting with Foras a month ago? The demise of Foinse was not some lightning bolt of the skies, totally unexpected.
Afterall, there are 4 Sinn Fein Board members at Foras, or maybe they all resigned months ago to save themselves the embarassment and smell of hypocrisy.
Bring back La Nua!!

I guess with La Nua and Foinse being chopped Sinn Fein's hostility to the Irish language has been exposed -- finally -- and Adams is starting to squirm.

Gerry,
You're a wee bit late for the funerals. La Nua's was held last year, in case no one told you.
Foinse's was held last month.

I've heard of locking the barn door after the horse as bolted, but this is ludicrous.

Gerry, why didn't you speak out loud, when the microphone was at your chin, the cameras were rolling and the ballroom was filled with reporters?

caithfidh me a rá nach gcreidim aon rud a deir polaiteoir ar bith liom sa tír seo níos mó nó cuireann siad an dubh ina gheall orainn i rith an ama ach fágfaidh mé sin mar atá sé, ach tá rud amháin a dtiocfadh leis an uasal Adams a dhéanamh láithreach agus ní héigeán labhairt le Foras na Gaeilge mar gheall air.Tá bean bhocht i bPort a'Dúnáin atá cráite de bharr nach dtig léi oideachas dara leibhéal Gaeilge a fháil da mac ainneoin go bhfuair sé iomlán a chuid oideachais fríd mheán na Gaeilge go dtí seo,Cás glé soléir sárú cearta daonna atá ann dar liom ar an an pháiste seo agus ar a thuismítheoirí.Tá sé glan in éadan spiorad Comhaontú Aoine an Chéasta agus contráilte go morálta.D'Fhéadfadh an tuasal Adams focal a chur i gcluais an Aire atá freagrach as an éagóir seo a bheith déanta agus í a chur ina céart.Na habair liom go mbeidh orainn cás eile cúirte a thógáil i gcoinne an Aire seo mar a b'éigeán dúinn a dhéanamh 15 bliana ó shin ar shon páistí Mheánscoil Feirste.Ba sin an tam a rialaigh an breitheamh, cé nach dtiocfadh leis briseadh dlí áirithe a fheiceáil sa chás, go bhfacthas dó go raibh dualgas morálta ar an Roinn Oideachas, oideachas dara leibhéal a chuir ar fáil do phaistí a fuair bunoideachas Gaeilge. An bhfuil muid ag rá go bhfuil Aire Sinn Féinneach lán chomh héagórach leis an Sasanach a bhí i gcumhacht an tam sin? Is mó i bhfad an éagóir dar liom séanadh oideachais ina theanga féin ar an ghasúr seo na druidim FOINSE ná go deimhin Druidim LÁ NUA féin.Tá súíl agam go bpléann siad sin ag an "soire" Gaeilge a bheas acu i mbaile Athá Cliath ámárach.

ah, the SF bogie man theories continue... Gerry it doesn't matter what you say, the great and the good and the disaffected have decided it was SF what did it, agus sin é. Seems SF aren't too happy after all about the "closure of another paper" despite the inability of their board members to stop it. Glad to hear them sounding peed off. Now let's get some actions to back it up

Tá laochra ag an Ghaeilge go fóill buíochas le Dia, mar a fheictear i measc na hainmneacha thuas, ach níl na laochra i gcumhacht!!
Tá seanfhocal sa Ghaeilge a Ghearóid, ní fiú bheith ag caoineadh nuair ata an tórramh imithe. Cá raibh na guthanna nuair a bhí Lá nua agus Foinse i mbaol a mbáis??
Tá céimeanna gur féidir glacadh, glas arais Lá Nua agus Faoinse agus níos tábhachtaí arís b'fhéidir cuir deireadh leis an sarú cearta daonna agus cinntigh go bhfuil meánscolaíocht Ghaeilge ar fáil i nDoire agus in Ard Mhacha. Maoinigh Coláiste Speirín agus Gaelscoil na Daróige!!
Is uafásach an rud é go bhfuil deireadh ag teacht le fás na Gaelscolaíochta agus leis na meáin Ghaeilge agus Sinn Fein i gcumhacht!

I am surprised that Gerry Admas in his press release is not also trying to take credit for founding Nuacht 24.
